HD technotes with FCP

Final Cut Pro: Additional RAM may be recommended for High Definition video formats

Compressed HD needs 2 gigs.  Uncompressed 4

Final Cut Pro 6.0.1: About transferring AVCHD footage

AVCHD footage transfers like P2 - through a special version of capture. SD won't work.  Neither with DVD recording AVCHD. It'll be USB 2, and last it'll get transcoded to either AIC or Prores

Final Cut Pro 6.0.1: Incorrect AVCHD clips may be transferred

Long clips 'span' across a number of files (and will likely 'hiccup' with each jump from file to file.)  Make sure you shoot in smaller moments.

Final Cut Pro 6.0.1: HD ProRes 422 capture requires Mac Pro or Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5 Ghz

It seems that if you want to capture directly into Prores, you just need a powerful machine.

Final Cut Pro 6: 1080p24 workflow for Canon HV20 camcorderFinal Cut Pro 6.0.1: Working with spanned AVCHD clips

How to work with Canon's flavor of 24p with this camera.  Have this camera?  Must read.

Final Cut Pro 5: Unexpectedly quits after importing XDCAM Clips

Final Cut Pro 5: Unexpectedly quits after importing XDCAM Clips

After importing a number of XDCAM clips into Final Cut Pro using Sony's PDZK-P1 XDCAM Transfer Software (available from Sony), it's possible for Final Cut Pro to enter a condition where it may unexpectedly quit.

Solution

This issue is addressed by the Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 Update. "

Final Cut Pro: Avoid enabling audio preview when capturing DVCPRO HD over FireWire

Final Cut Pro: Avoid enabling audio preview when capturing DVCPRO HD over FireWire

When capturing DVCPRO HD footage over FireWire in Final Cut Pro, avoid enabling the Preview checkbox for audio. If you select this checkbox, audio artifacting may occur or Final Cut Pro may unexpectedly quit.

As a workaround, monitor audio directly from your video deck during capture.

Solution

Update to Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 or later."

M2T files and Final Cut Pro - The Digital Video Information Network

M2T files and Final Cut Pro - The Digital Video Information Network:
How can I use these files (from a firestore fs-4 pro HD recorder) in FCP?  Sorry if this has come up before, but for some reason I'm unable to search in these forums.

Using a Firestore with HDV information.
Solutions include MPEG Streamclip (losing timecode) and HDxDV (keeps TC).
Then there's the whole question of if keeping your TC is necessary.

Final Cut Pro 5.1.1: Updating older projects to address duplicated frames in P2 media

Final Cut Pro 5.1.1: Updating older projects to address duplicated frames in P2 media: "Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 resolves an issue in using the Import Panasonic P2 feature with 720p/24PN footage that can result in duplicate frames in rendered sequences. The issue does not occur with P2 media that is imported into Final Cut Pro 5.1.1. But the issue can still occur in Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 if the project contains 720p/24pn P2 media that was imported using an earlier version of Final Cut Pro 5."

About the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview feature in Final Cut Pro HD

About the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview feature in Final Cut Pro HD: ""

Although this setup works for any video format, it can be particularly useful when editing high definition video that would otherwise require a fairly expensive HD monitor. Progressive video formats such as 720p are well suited for monitoring on a computer display. If you are doing critical online editing or color correction, you may still want to use an external CRT video monitor, especially when your final output is interlaced broadcast video.

editors's note: Definitely worth reading.

Final Cut Pro: Set the time and date on your camera before shooting video

Final Cut Pro: Set the time and date on your camera before shooting video: "Final Cut Pro: Set the time and date on your camera before shooting video

Setting the time and date on your camera is important. Some of Final Cut Pro's features require time and date information on the tape in order to function reliably. For instance, if you're capturing DV or HDV using scene break detection, it's important to set the camera's clock before shooting video."
