Macbookpro info updated

I did some poking around on Apple store.

First, there still is a 17" MBP. It's just bigger. Nothing really else great about it.

The graphics have been improved on all the pro models, the screen is only available in glossy and the battery life is now 5 hours. Did nobody mention that because they didn't count it as a feature...or they didn't want to draw attention to the poor battery life of the existing MBP?

I think the multi touch trackpad is neat - the only things I could think of for a four finger gesture were obscene. I then got to thinking that it'd be funny if it could sense a middle finger only trackpad gesture as a force quit.

I'm not sure how I feel about the 'clickpad.' I hate that feature in laptops now, so I'll be curious if it really works/feels great. Given apple's track record, it should...but I still don't love it.

Apple now has a $300 set of jumps from $999 to $2799.

  • $999 MB white
  • $1299 MB alum (actually slower than the $999 one, but better graphics)
  • $1599 MB alum faster
  • $1799 MB air
  • $1999 MB Pro
  • $2499 MB Pro (fast) or MB air (fast). One note, the MBP is only 1.53 ghz faster. $500 for a small bump
  • $2799 for the MBP 17"

Wait. No firewire 400. I bet there's a ton to be made in FW hubs and FW 800 to 400 adapters now.

Last...There's a 2.8 Ghz Build to order option only. it's an extra $300. So, it's $800 to go from a 2.4 to a 2.8 processor.

Apple Notebook Event

So, yeah, new notebooks.

Yes, the 17" still exists.

I am curious though: it's too early to tell (and it'll be this way until the Apple store opens back up....)

I couldn't see any firewire ports on the 15" new MBP.

And with the DVI (full) gone...how does hardware like the MXO fare?

And no Blu-Ray. "Steve: "Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.""

Don't Panic - great summary of all the RED stuff out there.

Don't Panic:
"So hey, that RED One camera is in the hands of its first customers, and there has been an explosion of traffic, images, enthusiasm and confusion about it.

Mostly confusion."

Graphics Cards for Final Cut Pro and Motion

From Ken Stone:

Graphics Cards for Final Cut Pro and Motion

Conclusion

Most editors will be perfectly suited with the NVIDIA 7300 GT. It is a fast high quality graphics card that suits the needs of the average video editor. The ATI Radeon X1900 XT is faster then the 7300 GT and makes the workflow with advanced 3D much more efficient. Note: A faster and more expensive graphics card is not going to give Final Cut Pro and Motion users any additional functions or features. The 'only' visible difference lies in the speed. But as everybody knows that time is money, a faster graphics card would definitely be a good investment.

With the upcoming release of OSX 10.5 and new application updates, more 3D effects will become possible, requiring more and more graphics power from our Macs. With only an additional $249 for the ATI X1900 XT to pay, this graphics card should be the first choice for the professional video editor.

Final Cut Studio: About external video-monitoring conflicts

Final Cut Studio: About external video-monitoring conflicts: "Some of the applications included with Final Cut Studio are able to display output to an external video device. Viewing such output on a precisely calibrated monitor is the best way to accurately evaluate color and framing of material that is intended to be viewed on a television. Apple Qualified video interfaces are evaluated with each of the Final Cut Studio applications that can access them for output. Other applications, such as iMovie HD and Final Cut Express also allow external video monitoring."

Now, I wrote this as a separate technote.

Mostly because it lead to another document:

Qualified Video Interfaces

Wanna know if that camera you're bidding on eBay will work? Yup. Check this chart out.

How about this: Why not check your deck/camera?

About the Blackmagic Gamma filter for Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro: About the Blackmagic Gamma filter for Final Cut Pro: When using Final Cut Pro 5.x to open clips previously captured with DeckLink 4.x or older drivers, a gamma shift may be seen in the video in some cases. A filter can be used to adjust the gamma to the expected level.
