[11:25 ET] Dave Nanian offered an update and workaround to compatibility problems between ATTO SCSI cards and the latest Panther updates:
I was also plagued with kernel panics at boot time with the ATTO UL4D, and have managed to both workaround the issue and get a response from ATTO.
To workaround the problem, boot in "Safe Mode" by holding the Shift key held down during boot. Once you're logged in, use ATTO's configuration utility to write default values to both channels of the UL4D (or one for the UL4S). Immediately restart, and you should be able to boot properly.
ATTO has - as of this morning - acknowledged the issue. A firmware bundle was supposed to be released at the same time as the driver, but was not. They claimed it would be released 30 minutes after I talked to them at about 9am -- it should be up there by now. But, until you download and apply, the aforementioned workaround should get you moving again.
